Growing up, I would pretend to be a mom. I'd play out scenarios with my imaginary kids in my head: imagine how I'd explain heartbreak, plan how I'd teach them to notice beauty in the details, hope they would grow into good citizens. I never doubted I had a maternal instinct, and pursuing it felt like a life's purpose.
